World Anti-fascist War Hailar Memorial Park (Tips, Photos & Map)

If you are going to visit Hailar on your Inner Mongolia Tour, you are highly recommended to visit the World Anti-fascist War Hailar Memorial Park, a war theme park set on the former Hailar Fortress built by the Japanese Forces of Aggression during the Second World War. The Hailar Fortress was one of the 17 fortresses ever built by the Japanese invaders in the Northeast China from 1931 to 1945.

The Hailar Fortress was constructed as a springboard aimed at attacking the former Soviet Union and eventually fought hand in hand with the Germany fascist army to control the whole world. Tens of thousand Chinese laborers were taken from the hinterland and forced to build the fortress. All the labores were killed after the completion of the fortress on the pretext of keeping the military secret.

The Hailar Fortress is perched on the open area 3km in the north of Hailar District of Hulunbuir City. The fortress is surrounded by the Aobao Mountain and the Beishan Mountain on its three sides. The fortress is composed of two connected parts – the ground part and underground part. The underground works was about 12 – 17 meters below the ground works. The Hailar Fortress takes an area of 22 square kilometers with 5 major postions and 4 auxiliary positions.

On August 8, 1945, The former Soviet Union declared the war against Japan. With the support of Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army and the Mongolian People’s Army, the 1.58 million Soviet Red Army made fatal attacks on the Japanese soldiers stationed in the Northeast China. On August 18, all the 3000 Japanese soldiers walked out of the positions in the Hailar Fortress and surrounded.

Most of the facilities and the fortress have been well preserved with their original appearance to a remarkable degree. The World Anti-fascist War Hailar Memorial Park is the largest war theme park of such kind in China. By making use of the original fortress, the park planner has incorporated many relevant war documents, pictures and objects to vividly depict the Japanese military aggression and Chinese bravery in fighting against the Japanese invasion.

The entrance to the park is flanked by two crumbling gun turrets ( the ticketing office) on the left side and a base on the right engraved in Chinese, Russian and Mongolian with the name of the park and a real formerly Soviet T35 tank on it.
